Shiho Tsutsumi, one of kittoi's founders, uses a wheelchair in her daily life. One day, a friend made her a kappogi (Japanese-style apron) specially modified to be easier for wheelchair users.
While being deeply moved by the comfort of using something tailored to her body, as she used it daily, small ideas began to surface: "If this part were like this, it might be easier for people with other disabilities to use too..."
Eventually, this evolved into a desire to create a kappogi that would be easy to use and beautifully designed for everyone, regardless of whether they use a wheelchair or not. This became the very first product we would deliver from kittoi.
"Good for everyone." It's not simple, but we hope as many people as possible will feel this way.
Easy to put on and take off - just slip it over your head
The neckline is designed to be wide and spacious for easy wearing, with elastic at the back of the neck for easy on and off while fitting to your body size. Unlike traditional kappogi, there's no need to tie strings behind your back. Perfect for wheelchair users, those with limited hand mobility, and anyone who's always on the move.
Large pockets that hold everything
Large, convenient pockets that can be accessed with either hand, from above or from the side, to store various items freely. You can carry everything you need to quickly access - smartphone, pen, clothespins, stamps, house keys. With enough capacity to fit paperback-sized booklets, notebooks, and wallets.
Always clean with a built-in towel holder
A towel-hanging band on the left hip makes it convenient for drying your hands after washing or wiping up small spills. No more searching for misplaced towels or having to go back to get one. You can also hang hand towels or dishcloths to make kitchen work more efficient.
Easy-to-move arm area
Drop shoulders provide easy movement around the shoulders. The area from the elbow down is made of water-repellent and stain-resistant material, so you can work with water worry-free. The cuffs have thick elastic bands that stay in place and stop securely at the wrists even when you raise your arms.
Open back design for comfort
The open back design means no tightness around the neck, allowing for relaxed and comfortable wear. It won't feel restrictive even when worn for long periods, making it ideal for those who dislike neck constriction or prioritize ease of movement.
Safe design for wheelchair users
To prevent fabric from getting caught in wheelchair wheels, the front covers the whole body while the back has a gently curved, rounded hem. This minimizes interference with the wheels, reducing concerns about dirt and fabric damage for long-lasting wear.
Choosing fabric is one of the most important steps in creating kittoi's "Kappogi for Everyone." However, if we use very expensive fabric, that cost must be reflected in the product price. Our wonderful "Kappogi for Everyone" might end up being accessible to only a few people.
So this time, we used deadstock fabric, prioritizing accessibility and environmental friendliness. Since it's limited fabric, we can't keep making the same thing forever, but that makes each piece a bit special.
kittoi is a brand with an exciting ambiguity - things will "surely" get better. From next time, we'll search for fabric that's both accessible and distinctly kittoi, so it can be loved even longer.
The images on our website, except for model wearing shots, will be updated when the fabric changes to show the actual product you'll receive as much as possible.
On December 29, 2024 (Sunday), we held a fitting session with the first sample of our completed "Kappogi for Everyone," inviting both people with disabilities and those without to actually try it on. While we heard "This is really great!" we also received feedback like "It would be nice if this part were a bit different." We found ourselves constantly saying "I see!" at the many perspectives and discoveries we couldn't have noticed on our own. We were reminded once again of the importance of carefully listening to experiences that only the people involved can truly understand.
While "Kappogi for Everyone" has been launched with the support of many people's voices, at kittoi we don't consider product launch as the "goal" but rather as the "start." To continue improving "Kappogi for Everyone," we want to keep listening to everyone's voices even after launch, so please share your opinions with us.
